Triple Chainring

Review Of The Specialized Sirrus Hybrid Bike

The entry-level Specialized Sirrus is the first in the sirrus range that we have chosen to take a look at. The Sirrus comes with entry-level specifications in terms of the grade of front fork, gear mechs and handlebar. However don’t let words like ‘basic’ and ‘entry level’ put you off. The Sirrus here has all the quality of design and build that you would expect from Specialized.

First of all, the bike is built round a beautiful aluminium frame – the design of the frame really defines the Specialized Sirrus look, with tapered and curved smooth-welded tubing. Mudguards and panniers can be fitted if you wish. There are people who hold the opinion that an aluminium frame is harsh. I can’t agree, particularly in this case as the Sirrus is fitted with 28c tyres to smooth out any road vibration before it gets to the frame.

The robust front fork has straight steel blades. It will take a mudguard and pannier rack as well.

The V-brakes, levers, shifters and drive train are all good-quality Shimano comonents. The triple chainset gives the Sirrus 21 gears, the lowest being plenty easy for the majority of hills. The EZ-Fire shifter system is very intuitive – click up and down with the two small levers, very easy to use.

The flat alloy handlebar is fitted with comfortable gel grips to smooth out any road vibration. The Body Geometry saddle is going to be very comfortable.

The tyres are Specialized’s own All-Condition Sport, designed for low rolling resistance on the road, but with enough grip to take you along towpaths and tracks safely. The Flak-Jacket puncture resistance gives you extra protection.

The flat pedals and chainguard fitted to the Sirrus is testament to the fact that most people will want to cycle in their normal clothes – not lycra and cleated shoes.

The entry-level Specialized Sirrus is great value for money. It’s light in weight, carries quality components and shows plenty of style – enough to turn heads on the trip to work or out in the lanes for fun. At around £350 it’s really hard to fault.
