The Powabyke Range Of Electric Bikes
It’s undoubtedly the case that when they first came out, the look of electric bikes did not really go down well. The advantages seemed undeniable – leave the car at home and still arrive at the office fit for a day’s work, hills no longer a problem, cut down on the fuel bills etc etc – but the bikes available just didn’t appeal at all. With the new 2011 range, Powabyke look to have combined state-of-the-art battery and motor technology with a bike that rides well and has great style.
The bikes are based on alloy hybrid frames from Raleigh, polished to a smart finish. The range consists of 3 models, with different frame geometry and numbers of gears.
Drive is to the front wheel, using a powerful brushless 250 watt motor. The 36V lithium battery gives a range of 20 miles – if you pedal a normal amount. If you choose not to pedal at all, the range drops to 10 miles. The maximum speed is 15mph, controlled by a twist-grip.
The battery fits on the down-tube like a water bottle and can be removed from the bike to recharge indoors if you want. Charging time is around 5 hours.
For extra peace-of mind you might like to get hold of an additional battery to carry with you. The batteries are fitted with a level indicator so you can monitor the charge remaining.
All have really nice alloy V-brakes, 700mm double-wall alloy wheels for speed and a suspension seatpost to take the sting out of rough surfaces. The designers have thought about the more practical aspects as well – mudguards, a rear pannier and a stand complete the picture.
What are the differences between the three Powabyke models?
Powabyke X-6
All the features outlined above, plus:-
- Six derailleur gears, with Shimano components and EZ Fire shifters.
- Rigid alloy front fork
- A choice of 18” or 21” sizes
Powabyke X-6 LS
A smaller frame, with step-through geometry. It’s available in only one size, 15”. Otherwise, all the specifications are identical to the X-6.
Powabyke X-24
This top of the range model has all the features and specificatons you need to make the most of your cycling.
- 24 gears, again with Shimano components and EZ Fire shifters
- Suspension front fork
- Choice of 18” or 21” frames
I think that Powabyke now have the range that is going to move electric bikes into the mainstream. They may be considered quite expensive, but just think about the savings you would make if you could leave the car in the garage – on top of which, you have a quality bike even without the electric drive.
