Carbon Silicon and Spandau’s Gary Kemp!
Visa problems seems to have led to the collaboration of Gary Kemp, of Spandau Ballet fame and Carbon Silicon. Carbon Silicon’s two Canadian shows were unfortunately cancelled at the last minute to due bass player Leo ‘Eezykill’ Williams having being refused entry to the country. Despite them allowing former Clash guitarist Mick Jones and, Generation X’s Tony James along with drummer Dominic Greensmith, it was clear the gigs couldn’t go ahead. Tony James recalls via his blog that he saw Gary Kemp on Marylebone High Street, shortly afterwards and realised that a collaboration could be in order. Gary’s enthusiasm reminded Tony of Billy Idol, his former band mate in Generation X. Sticking to their usual work schedule of 3pm till 8pm every day, Carbon Silicon wanted to get Gary into the studio to record a song. The problem remained that they had nothing for him at the time, so the pressure was on to write and record on the same day. Tony recalls “I mean Mj (Mick Jones) and I always write real fast, but there’s usually some time thinking about it.” This audacious plan seems to have worked though. Having not only recorded one track in a day they persuaded Gary to return for another day and record a second track. The fruits of the this can now be downloaded from Carbon Silicon’s official website for free.
The tracks, Maybe That’s The Meaning of Life and The Inconvenience of Truth, are a slightly different direction for Carbon Silicon. Gary joins Mick on both tracks, on vocals, but his influence can easily be heard before there’s any singing. Always wanting to experiment with their music, the two tracks lend a electronic and possibly even pop like sound to their music. A refreshing change for the band, it seems that these tracks are a one-off collaboration not to be repeated. However the songs themselves are pure Carbon Silicon. The lyrics of Maybe That’s The Meaning of Life talk of not finding easy answers or religious faith but of thinking on you own, while the Inconvenience of Truth follows a similar theme. Carbon Silicon’s members have a history of crossing genres and styles and do so easily. Its still almost unbelievable to think that they got everything done in a matter of hours but Tony James assures us that is how it happened. So download the tracks, with their cover art, while they are still free and enjoy three veterans of the British music scene making music – ‘without a record label, radio or release schedule’.
