Fifth Wheel & Trailer Towing Safety – Why Your Brakes May Not Be Enough

The most important factor contributing to safe RV towing is its stopping power during an emergency. Most RVers generally only encounter soft, slow, planned stops and therefore can be easily misled about the true condition of their fifth wheel or trailer brakes. If you only test your brakes under ideal conditions, you can gain a false sense of security about your braking status. An unplanned emergency stop is absolutely not the time to find out that your brakes are not working properly or are inadequate for your RV           .

Below are some common misconceptions about trailer brakes:

  1. If your electric trailer brakes work well in the beginning, they will still be fine after 5,000 miles. WRONG: This is the number one mistake RVers make. Trailer and fifth wheel electric brakes need to be professionally inspected and adjusted on a regular basis. As a matter of fact, many RV experts believe most people are driving around without any trailer brakes to speak of. Unfortunately they won’t realize this until it’s too late.
  2. Testing the brake controller as you pull out onto the road is enough to set it at the right setting. WRONG: Driving at a slow speed and then lightly touching the brakes will not give you sufficient information about the performance of your brakes. Ideally, you need to find a dirt or gravel road and perform a series of hard stops with someone listening for the trailer brakes activating. You do not want your truck brakes doing the majority of the braking in any situation. They may stop your rig going 35 miles per hour just fine, but in a high-speed situation you need those trailer brakes working
  3. If the trailer brake lights are working, then I know my connection is fine. WRONG: Most brake cables have seven pins, each with a specific purpose. If debris gets into a pin slot, it can short out. This means that although your brake lights are working, the actual trailer brakes may not be.

The Future of Safe Fifth Wheel Towing

Because inadequate brakes contribute to numerous accidents every day on the road, leaders in the RV industry are recommending some alternative products that come with extra braking power. The leader in the field is an invention by an aerospace engineer and road safety expert, Joe Jamieson. The Automated Safety Hitch is reportedly already preventing accidents and saving lives with its extra set of heavy duty hydraulic brakes (the same ones found on two-ton truck). That means that in addition to your truck and trailer brakes, you can now have a third set of brakes to increase your stopping power or even act as a back-up in case your other brakes fail. An added benefit is the reduction of wear and tear on your truck brakes as well as your RV brakes.
