Review Of The Sirrus Elite Hybrid Bike From Specialized
The Specialized Sirrus Elite takes the Sirrus range into the area of serious luxury. The main upgrade from the Sport is again the front fork, but there is also a better rear derailleur and a definitely nice handlebar with bar ends. The Elite is still aimed at the same rider, who wants a bike for commuting or fun out on the lanes at the weekend, but who wants a refined package.
The E5 aluminium frame is around 75g lighter than the A1 frame fitted to the lower spec models. It will still carry mudguards and a rear pannier though.
The front fork is a major change. It’s built in FACT carbon incorporating elastomer inserts in the blades of the fork. These improve the vibration-damping ability of the carbon blades to improve the ride still further. Although you can no longer mount a front pannier rack it will still take mudguards.
The V-brakes, levers, shifters and gear mechs are all similar to the Sport, but with the rear derailleur upgraded to Shimano’s Deore model. The EZ-Fire gear shifters are simple – two small levers, one gear up or down per click. The triple chainset and the Shimano 8-speed cassette give you 24 gears to choose from.
An upgraded handlebar and stem are the other main improvements to the Sirrus Elite over the Sport. The handlebar is a nice oval section alloy by Specialized. It’s fitted with gel grips and shaped bar ends. The stem is adjustable to 4 positions, allowing you to get your most comfortable bar height.
In other respects the Elite is very similar to the Sport. The puncture-resistant tyres are a good combination of low rolling resistance for the road and grip for trails and tracks. Wheels have the same double-wall rims and stainless spokes. The saddle is Body Geometry’s comfortable Riva on an alloy post. Flat composite pedals are standard.
There’s no doubt that the Specialized Sirrus Elite is a lovely bike. There don’t seem to be any bad reviews from purchasers out there. You will pay extra for the improvements over the Sport, but I think those improvements are well worth the extra.
